Ludvig ejects as Cam Young kicks open the door down the stretch

Man, what a finish! Entering Sunday with a 4 shot lead, all Ludvig needed to do was shoot another -1 round and he would walk away with the trophy. Everything looked on track, even after blowing his drive through the fairway and into the left rough on the difficult 4th hole where missing the fairway was an automatic bogey (or worse…see Thorbjornsen, M. Yikes!) He somewhat righted the ship with six straight pars, but the wheels really fell off on 11. After a good drive, the otherwise sweet-swinging Swede inexplicably wiped one waaaay right, into the middle of the pond. He shook that off to save bogey, but it must have rattled him, because the over-correction came on the 12th tee, where he pulled it into the water left. That led to a double and Ludvig exited, stage left to make room for the Cam Young/Matt Fitzpatrick show (with special guest Xander Schauffele).

Xander looked to be out of the running after a 74 on Saturday, but came out and made 6 birdies, including three in the last four holes to get in the house at -11. After Ludvig excused himself, that left FitzPatrick and Young - playing in the same group - in a sort of mini Ryder Cup rematch. Fitzpatrick birdied three of the first 4 holes to take the early lead in that pairing and had another mini run on 12, 13 and 15 and was a stroke up on Cam after the 15th. Both parred the 16th, and Fitz hit a safe shot to the middle of the 17th, setting the stage for Cam. Young took a much more aggressive line on 17th and left himself with under 10 feet for a birdie. In previous years, this would have been an easy par and no change in scoring, but since last summer, Young has really improved his putting and this one was never really in doubt. That birdie tied the hole and their match, leaving the 18th to decide it all. Again, Cam Young delivered, absolutely mashing a 375 yard drive down the right side if the fairway, in what was determined to be the longest drive recorded on that hole in the shotlink era (so, since 2003). Fitpatrick blew his drive through the fairway into the right straw and that was all she wrote.

Just 9 teams spent the 6 points on Cam Young this year, and it really paid off for them this week. In the end, Ride-Her-Til-She-Bucks took the $200 win, pairing Young with Xander, Fleetwood, Spaun and Homa. This moves them up from 218th to 99th overall.

As you might guess with this much money and just a few teams having picked Young, there was a lot of movement at the top of the Board also. Bumperhead remains in the overall lead by a healthy margin, but Miles City Mulligans (finished 5th this week) jumps all the way from 35th to 2nd overall, while Windowlickers II falls from 2nd to 17th.

On to the Valspar…
