Bridgeman hangs on for his first win as Rory's putter turns to ice
Jacob Bridgeman had ice in his veins for about 70 holes this week and said he only got nervous somewhere on the 16th hole. Luckily for him, he’d built up a big enough lead over everyone else that he had strokes to play with. Of course, if Rory had left his putter out to bask in some of that Southern California sunshine and give it a chance to warm up, he might have won going away. I lost count but over the weekend I had to have seen at least 10 of Rory’s putts that burned edges, stopped just short or otherwise managed to avoid going in the hole (and he still shot 69-67 on the weekend!) If I worked at Scotty Cameron or Odyssey, I’d have a couple gift wrapped putters on their way to Rory right now…just in case.
Surprisingly, nobody picked Jacob Bridgeman this year in our game. Not often that someone that good sneaks through this group without being picked, and it keeps his $4MM paycheck out of the earnings pool. Ultimately, Iona Golf had 9 golfers make the cut this weekend led by Rory, Adam Scott and Xander who still earned them a total of just over $5MM and took the victory over Harts by a slim $200k.
The win moves Iona Golf up from 34th to 3rd overall, with $11.8MM. Windowlickers II remains in the lead with $12.3MM.
With the California swing now concluded, the Tour will move to Florida for the Cognizant before yet another Siggy the following week, the Arnold Palmer.
