Wyndham outduels Si Woo and Scottie

After Scottie Scheffler dismantled TPC Craig James with a winning total score of -31 last year, the owners brought in Lanny Wadkins to renovate the course and make it harder. They admitted the project called for a budget of perhaps $10-$12 million dollars, but they decided to double that and instead spent $25MM (& doubled the initiation fee from $75k to $150k). For that investment, they got Wyndham Clark winning at -30 this year. Hey, it worked! One stroke more difficult…

In fairness, they got a lot of rain before the event and over the first couple days, so ¾ rounds were played lift-clean-and-place. And the PGA stipulate that pin locations have no more than 2° around them, meaning no more than a one-ball-out read was required any putt within about 15 feet. This is confirmed by observing that Si Woo Kim - a below average putter at -0.2 Strokes Gained: Putting for the season coming into this event - gained more than 8 strokes in this event. I’m a Si Woo fan (how can you not be?) but that is a sign that these greens were not that hard to putt on.1

Figuring out the winner was pretty easy this week, as Long Balls was the only team to have the top 3 on the leaderboard (Clark, Si Woo and Scottie) and took easily earned the win and the $150 payout. This moves them up from 78th to 37th (the last of the overall payout spots).

Herbert’s Hackers 1 maintains the overall lead by ~$2MM as the Tour heads to the Charles Schwab.

1  Another Si Woo stat: he led by 5 after the first two rounds, shot 68-65 on the weekend…and finished 3 back of Wyndham Clark.
